We love fall

Fall is here, we are enjoying the cooler weather. Here is my chubs, all decked out in her warm clothes.

We have been keeping busy (and not blogging about it).

We have been to the raspberry fields. I learned to can raspberry jam.

We have been to the apple orchards. I learned to can applesauce.

We have been to the pumpkin patch. I am NOT going to learn to can my own pumpkin. I love baking from scratch, but I can gather no enthusiasm for making pumkin pie from an actual pumpkin. Even though friend Jenny does, and it is the best pie ever.

So it turns out I enjoyed canning. I liked filling up my house with the warmth and smells of canning. The jar pops were very satisfying, and the jars look so pretty sitting on my pantry shelf.

  1. Do you have a canning machine? I dream of a little house with a blackberry bush and strawberry patch where I can can delicious jams :)

When that times comes I'm coming to you for tips :D

  2. Wow! What a great homemaker you are! I haven't learned the art of canning yet. Perhaps someday...

    You're inspiring.

  4. Don't be afraid of real pumpkin unless you don't really like pumpkin, but if you like pumpkin, I think you'd LOVE baking it from scratch.

I'm just sayin'...in case you need something more to do.

  5. Sweet. I love canning. It's the best. I tried making pumpkin pie from real pumpkins, it didn't go so well, but I do believe that timing is everything, so I will be trying it again, hopefully at a more appropriate time. ;)

  6. Do you pressure can? I heard it's not really worth the hassle. Maybe you can comment on what is the best about canning: that you can actually do it? that you know what's in it? that it's cheaper? that it tastes better? another reason? I'm trying to get into it, but am just weighing all those reasons before going for it...

  7. Angela - I have not done pressure canning. I used a steam canner (not sure if that is the right term) rather than a bath canner. It takes about the same amount of time to process the jars, but I think it is less hot. What I like about canning overall is that I like to make things from scratch. And I think it does taste better when you buy local and preserve it yourself. What I liked about canning the jam was that I made a no sugar (except I did use some honey) jam. It's difficult to find jam that has no sugar or splenda, and it is pricey. I don't know that the applesauce was necessarily cheaper. So I guess the bottom line for me is that I like buying local fresh stuff and I like making things out of it. If that's not really your game, canning would probably just be a big pain and not worth it. I'm planning on canning some apple pie filling, and that would be worth it in saving time if you are like us and LOVE homemade apple pie. Just open the can and dump it in the crust!
